All About Me..

Home

My name is Jason. Am I a slacker? Some say so; others can't picture me as one. I don't really want to judge that for myself, so I'll allow you the honors. If you're okay with that, that is. I'd have a voting contest; you know, Is Jason Really A Slacker? Send in your vote and see the results! But that's just really pathetically hokey, so I won't.

So.. me. What do you want to know? I'm nineteen and I was born in Baytown, Texas. Small place; I don't remember it much. At age two I moved to Anchorage, Alaska, and spent until '86 playing in the snow. Then back to Texas. Then back to Anchorage again in '94, where I graduated from Dimond High School and spent time just.. well, slacking.

I have two parents [surprise, surprise] and a sister, Elizabeth. My dad pastors a Pentecostal church here in Anchorage, and my mother works for an insurance agency. Both of them are always exhausted. My sister does anything and everything and never gets sleepy.

In 1997 I left Anchorage and attended Texas Bible College for a year. For kindness' sake, I won't go into the details. While there, I worked for Gateway 2000, providing technical support for those really stupid people that own computers and call people like me to fix them. Not really the ideal job; I'm sure many of you have heard the horror stories encountered by other techs. No longer am I one of those sad souls.

While in Houston, I met a young woman named Lori; she was a year older than me, had long, dark hair and beautiful blue eyes. Because of a bleeding toe, we met, talked, and fell in love. She followed me to Alaska in July, and that same month she agreed to marry me; we're shooting for March of '99. She's the reason I smile so much. ;)

In May of '98 I returned to Alaska. I now work for a computer consulting business in town and am about to begin working for my MCSE [Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer] Certification. That will provide me with the opportunity to make some decent money while pursuing the things I really want to do with my life.

And what is that? Several things, though I'm focusing on one particular one: writing. For the past six or seven years, I've been throwing together short stories that have never really gotten finished. Maybe three stories made it to completion, but they all sucked. I submitted a short story, The Waiter, to a fiction competition at the University of Alaska Anchorage in '96. I didn't even get an honorable mention. [..and that was one story my sister actually loved].

Currently, though, I'm working on what is looking to be my first serious attempt at a novel. It's untitled as of now and at the moment is shortly below thirty thousand words. They always say to write what you know, especially when attempting your first book. I'm not quite writing what I know; part of it is, but the other half is writing a dream. The story is that of a young writer being handed the opportunity of a lifetime: publication, along with a book contract. I won't divulge anything other than that. Wait for it to hit the shelves of your local Barnes & Noble.

My other interests? Anything to do with the arts or entertainment fields, I suppose. I've been drawing for my whole life. I guess I'm okay; but it actually gets quite boring. Occasionally, I actually forget how to draw, and then learning all over again is kind of interesting. My style changes often. I'm also an avid movie fan; independent films are my favorites, though occasionally a big-budget commercial film will catch my eye. I love music as well, and have a fairly nice little collection.

Other than fiction, I also write poetry. I've written close to two hundred pieces, most of which I dislike, some of which I love. The ones I love are vastly outnumbered by the ones I don't. I've submitted one of them to several anthologies but have heard nothing back yet. No shocker there. Another thing I enjoy, though I'm not very good at, is singing. While at TBC in Houston, I met a couple of guys that had formed a band and were short a couple of songs. They'd been preparing to record a cd and needed some more tracks. They asked me to write a song for Danny, the bassist, for his father. I wrote it and titled it "Words to Say." They recorded it after editing it and putting music to it, and the end result was a song entitled "Special Friend." I also gave them a poem titled "Be Still," which they put music to and added a bridge and renamed "Small Voice." They were actually kind enough to let me record the lead vocals on that song myself. Their cd is being released in August/September of this year.

I enjoy some outdoor sports and activities as well; skiing, hiking, biking, baseball.. typical summer and winter things. I missed an entire ski season last winter, so I'm planning on making up for it this year.

That's enough about me. Hope you enjoyed the bio; below you'll find a list of my personal favorites in several categories. Thanks for reading.
